HOT, HAPPY, HORSES - PART 2

Hello again!

Today's post is the second addition of HOT, HAPPY, HORSES!

In my last post I told you guys about some of the tips Mommy uses on us that keep us comfy during the extremely hot Summers here in SoCal!

Here are a few more helpful hacks for hot weather!

1) HOT HEADS - In the heat, keeping your head and neck cool is essential. The same should go for us horses too! But how? Well, Mommy will sometimes place a damp sponge under the crown piece of our headstall and\or halters while we are working. She also likes to soak our flymasks in cold water before she puts them back on before heading home to our house. This keeps our heads cooler for longer,  as they dried, even once Mommy leaves for her house. But be sure that you wring out the flymask before putting on our faces, if you don't than the excess water will drip into our eyes which is very uncomfortable!

2) SUNSCREEN! - Everyone knows that it is important to wear sunscreen to avoid sunburns. It might sound funny, but horses get sunburns just like Humans! Especially on pink skin under white markings, and especially on our faces!

FUN FACT: Most horses have dark grey skin, only under white markings is our skin pink. And only some of the time. A white horse is called "grey" because the skin is grey under the white hair. An albino or white horse is a white coated horse that has pink skin.

Some horses are more sensitive to sun then others.

For example, Lola is much more likely to get a sunburn than I am, because she has more pink skin than I do. In order to help keep burns to a minimum and make sure your horse stays comfy, you can apply a layer of Desitin (diaper cream) or a cheap human sunscreen from your local convenience store. This will help keep us from getting ouchies on our pink noses! And honestly I find it quite funny!

BUT BE CAREFUL! It is important that you don't get the sunscreen too deep in our nostrils, our mouth, or our eyes! That would not be fun for either you or us horses!

I hope these two more Summer tips will help you guys help us!

Lots Of Kisses!
